Directive

A message from the desk of:  Chief Academic Officer

The district held its 2nd professional development day for 2018-19 on November 26th. The day was planned around feedback received from teachers where they attended  three sessions -one session gave the opportunity  to collaborate with grade/subject-level peers, one session where they could attend a workshop of their choice, and the third session where specific training was made available in either math,  ELlevation, or Manifestation Determination to support ongoing areas of focus.

The day started off with our  Superintendent welcoming everyone and a keynote address on math strategies for 21st century learning from ORIGO Math. All K-5 and middle school math teachers attended the math training session with Sara Delano from ORIGO who is also the co-author of Visible Learning in Mathematics with John Hattie. The trainers will continue to work with our schools, using a coaching model that includes demonstration lessons. We are excited to bring this new math strategies training to AESD as we continue to grow our math performance across all grades.

What was significant about this day also was a large number of administrators and teacher leaders shared best practices and/or conducted training around programs and support. As we continue to put the spotlight on our internal strengths, we also open up the door to shared learning and ongoing capacity building for continuous improvement.

As we continue to focus on student success in AESD, I take this opportunity to thank our teacher leaders and administrators for their ongoing work on improving teaching and learning practices.

Thanks to all.
